Newsletter Sample #1 – Definition of Success
John Wooden (October 14, 1910 – June 4, 2010) (he would be 110 years old today) is considered by many as the greatest coach of all time. Many of his on-the-court achievements (e.g. 10 NCAA championships in 12 years) (1964-1975) will never be broke (repeat: NEVER).
But all of those basketball wins and records is not how Coach Wooden would want to be remembered. As a basketball coach and an English teacher, John Wooden knew success was more than a winning record or a good grade.
Coach Wooden concluded that four things were essential for true success. And all four were things that you could control.
- First was peace of mind.
- Second was self-satisfaction.
- Third was giving your very best effort.
- Fourth was coming as close as possible to reaching your potential, and ultimately doing your best, based on what you are capable of doing.
In 1948 he created the Pyramid of Success and over his lifetime gave many speeches and wrote several books to share his philosophy and definition of success with the world.
“Success is peace of mind attained only through self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to do the best of which you’re capable.”

Exercise to get started:
To achieve true success in your chosen type of work, and in your personal life, be very clear on the definition of success you are pursuing. Consider writing down your definition of success… one that will keep you focused and one that you would feel comfortable sharing with others.
